As part of Volunteer Week, we’re celebrating the difference DHL employees are making through the GoTeach programme, including our partnership with The Talent Foundry.
We spoke to Robert Boam, DHL Express Volunteer – Quality and Environmental Specialist, about his experience supporting young people and the impact it’s had both in and out of the classroom.
What motivated you to volunteer with GoTeach?
“It was the opportunity to support young people to develop essential skills – something I never had to prepare me for the world of work.”
In his role, Robert recognises how important certain employability skills are and how he feels GoTeach focuses on developing these.
“In my team, you see how diverse people are and how different skills come together – GoTeach felt like the perfect opportunity to reflect that.”
Robert enthusiastically went on to say that GoTeach has also supported his personal development which he expands on later.
What are the most significant benefits of GoTeach?
“It gives pupils real insight into what work actually looks like from the workforce’s perspective.”
For Robert, this exposure is especially valuable: “For example, I had never heard about logistics at school – it wasn’t talked about as a career option, just like I am sure many other industries aren’t. GoTeach helps young people better understand the workplace, the variety of roles available and how their skills can apply in real-world settings.”
How did you find your experience delivering GoTeach sessions with The Talent Foundry?
“The session was really well structured, and the facilitator’s enthusiasm was fantastic! They kept students engaged and on track as well as interactive with the students really involved and wanting to do well.”
Robert also felt fully supported during the volunteer journey: “We knew what to expect, and everything was provided beforehand. Working with volunteers from other business divisions like Supply Chain also added value and it was great having a mix so students could see the range of work DHL does.”
Can you share a specific success story or memorable moment?
“During one session, there was a student who struggled to engage at the start, but by the end he was leading his team’s presentation.”
This transformation stood out for Robert as there was stark contrast in this pupil from the start of the session to finish: “He earned a merit point – it was a complete turnaround!”
Robert felt this showed the impact of the workshop, stating that the session clearly developed the skills it intended on building.
What skills do you think young people need to succeed in today’s workforce?
Robert highlighted four key areas which were: communication, adaptability and resilience, teamwork and problem-solving and confidence and accountability.
He summarised by saying: “It’s about being willing to try, adapt and learn from mistakes.”
How has your experience influenced your own development?
“It’s improved my confidence with presenting and helped me understand different learning styles which I have applied in my role. I’ve been able to tailor how I deliver training and better read the room.”
On a personal level, Robert says he used to sit quietly in meetings, but he’s found new confidence in speaking up more.
He added: “There’s a real sense of fulfilment in contributing to a young person’s development” suggesting that supporting GoTeach provides mutual benefit for both young people and volunteers.
What advice would you give colleagues that are interested in getting involved?
“Just get out there and do it – you don’t need loads of experience.”
He spoke about the ease of the volunteer journey and feeling supported: “Everything is organised for you, so it’s easy to get involved – even if it’s outside your comfort zone.”
How would you summarise GoTeach in 3 words?
“Inspiring, empowering and impactful.”
